Frequently Asked Questions for Attendees

How do I register for the conference?

You can register for the conference until January 27th. Even though most of the live sessions will have occurred, registering (even after the conference has started) allows you to view the recorded sessions for the entire conference. Note: Keynote sessions and pre-conference workshops will not be recorded. Registration is available here.

How do I find the virtual platform online?

The virtual conference platform, Whova, is available online from your desktop computer or laptop through this link. NOTE: You will need Google Chrome to use the platform. Download Google Chrome here.

How do I find/download the app on the app store?

  1. Go to your app store and search for Whova. The app is free to install. Once installed, open the app and search for our event by typing in “DEC.” Tap DEC – Division for Early Childhood’s 36th Annual International Conference

  2. At the bottom of the screen tap “Join (registered attendees only). If you are not registered for the conference, follow the instructions for registering.

  3. You will be prompted to sign in. Tap the button that says, “sign in,” and tap any of the social media short cuts or use your registration email.

  4. On the next screen, select a password and enter your name and affiliation and tap “continue.”.

  5. Choose a profile picture to make it easier for other attendees to find you.

  6. Beef up your profile so that other attendees can search for and connect with you. Once you have added all the detail you care to, tap “My profile looks good.” Remember, you can go back and edit your profile anytime using the side menu.

  7. If you want to get notifications from Whova, keep the boxes on the next screen checked and tap continue.

  8. Now you are in the event!

How do I use the app to enhance my conference experience?

From inside the Whova app, you can browse sessions, set up your own itinerary (called an agenda), look for other attendees, participate in session discussions, and more. We recommend watching this short video to get a brief overview of how to use Whova to make the most of our conference experience. The more you familiarize yourself with the app in advance of the conference, the more capable you will feel to use the many features that make the virtual conference as lively and engaging a face-to-face conference. Watch this brief video for more information here.

How do I find sessions on a given topic?

At the DEC Conference, topics are referred to as strands. You can filter the sessions by strand, date, or by age the session topic pertains to. To filter the sessions,

  1. Tap on “Agenda” at the bottom of the screen,

  2. Tap on the filter button at the top of the screen

  3. Select the filters that match the sessions you would like to see by tapping on the box to the right

  4. Tap "show results." The app will show you a list of sessions that match your criteria.

How do I select the sessions I want to attend in advance of the conference?

  1. Create your own personalized conference itinerary by setting up your agenda. As you browse conference sessions, click on the tiny calendar icon to the right to add the session to your agenda.

  2. Once you tap on the add session icon you will be prompted to set a reminder on your phone calendar. Select the type of reminder you prefer and give Whova permission to access your calendar.

  3. For each session you add, you will be asked “What do you want to get out of this session?” You can decline to answer, postpone answering, or post a question to the session forum.

  4. Toggle back and forth between the conference agenda (Full Agenda) and your personalized agenda (My Agenda) at the top of the screen.

  5. If you click on the session title, you can see who else is planning to attend, participate in the session discussions (Q&A), “like” the session, see an overview of the session, see the links to session handouts, take notes during the session, send a chat, and add the session to your agenda.

  6. In addition to searching for sessions by strand, you can search for session by date and by age group the session topic pertains to.

How do I get into my sessions?

Sixty minutes prior to the start of the session, the session link will appear with the session name. Tap the link to connect to the session.

What if I miss a session I wanted to attend?

Conference sessions will be recorded and available until March 31st, 2021. The link to a recorded session will be added to the specific session page on Whova as soon as it is available.

What if my connection to a session is disrupted?

If your connection becomes disrupted, try logging back in. Participating in the live session allows you to interact with others in real time and get the most out of the learning opportunity. If you are unable to reconnect during the live session you will still be able to view the recorded session until March 31st, 2021.

What if there are audio or closed captioning issues?

If your audio is not connected, please try refreshing Google Chrome. Please check to make sure you are only logged into Whova on one Google Chrome tab. If you are still unable to access the audio, please request the call in number from the session host.

DEC has requested that presenters include closed captioning with their presentations this year. Closed captioning will be automated through the use of Google Slides or Powerpoint's text-to-speech features. Since the captioning is automated is may not pick up all the speech or pick up the speech perfectly.

If you need to access audio via TTY or relay service, please request the call in number from the session host. From there, you will be able to use the number with your preferred service.
